Attention is Everything

We’re a nimble ideas lab probing the intersection of the modern information environment and civic life. We’re interested in learning to live better with the internet — as individuals and as a society.

Attention is a civic good and the foundation of freedom.

We explore how the profit-driven algorithmic “Simulation” of modern social media hijacks attention, corrodes trust, and weakens democracy — and what we can do about it.

We turn that research and analysis into concrete tactics and recommendations that put human agency ahead of doomscrolling and engagement bait. Our mission is a humane, pro-democracy attention culture where citizens can think clearly, connect meaningfully, and act together to solve our biggest problems.

Our Mission

  • Reclaim Attention and Agency

We name the “Simulation,” expose manipulative design choices, and highlight the importance of stronger habits and norms that give people more control over when, why, and how they spend time online.

  • Strengthen the New Commons

We champion new tactics and models that prioritize authenticity, community, and an informed citizenry over digital dopamine and enable civic practitioners to more effectively navigate the modern attention economy.

  • Renew Democratic Culture

We advance an agenda rooted in common sense and civic patriotism to restore trust, rebuild belonging, and strengthen our collective ability to solve problems in an information environment built to distract and divide.
